The Birdsville Races were yet again another major success for the Kangaroo Bus Lines and the Royal Flying Doctors partnership. An amazing $7000 was raised via gold coin donations, which was a fantastic achievement considering the weather. Although usually a dirt and dust affair, this year’s event was hampered by torrential downpours causing the cancelling of one day of racing and preventing many travellers from even making it to the event. The rain did not stop the race goers that travelled to Birdsville, swapping riding boots for gum boots and donning ponchos and grabbing umbrellas, just made for more fun and laughs as they battled for a dry position!
Kangaroo Bus Lines annually supports the Royal Flying Doctors through our involvement in the races. During the event the KBL team operate a continuous shuttle service between the outback township and the racetrack. Supported by the Diamantina Shire Council and the Birdsville Race Club, the coach service operates on each race day, strictly for gold coin donation. The RFDS is a not-for-profit organisation that delivers both 24 hour emergency services and everyday essential health care to over 290,000 people every year, but relies heavily on fundraising initiatives and generous donations to provide these essential services to rural and remote Australians. The Kangaroo Bus Lines’ team has provided fundraising support for the RFDS over the last five years, donating an impressive total of over $40,000.00.
