Exploring the Bundaberg and Fraser Coast regions, the three-day tour will introduce students to locations steeped in early settler history, the magic of ‘Mary Poppins’ and aquatic wonders only a hop, skip and a jump from Brisbane.
On day two, experience a full day in Bundaberg starting at Bundaberg Brewed Drinks – the makers of craft brewed premium soft drinks enjoyed by generations of Australians. Within the iconic Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel, enjoy hands-on activities including sampling brews, playing ‘guess the flavour’ with their smellography wall and unravelling the secrets to their world-famous taste via the 360-degree cameras.
Following lunch on the banks of the Burnett River, travel back in time to life on a sugar cane plantation in the late 1800s at Fairymead House Sugar History Museum. Within the restored grand plantation house, learn the history of pioneer sugar families, the significant contribution by the South Sea Islander community and the process of producing sugar, from the sugarcane fields to crystallisation.
After dinner back at camp, depart for an informative ranger-guided tour at Mon Repos Turtle Encounter – the biggest loggerhead turtle rookery in the Southern Hemisphere!
From November – January visitors can marvel at the largest nesting sea turtles heaving themselves up to the dunes to lay their clutches of eggs. From January – March, join in forming a tunnel of lights to guide the baby turtles to the water’s edge as they begin their journey in the deep blue sea.
On day three, pack up camp and begin the journey home via Maryborough – Queensland’s industrial powerhouse in the final decade of the 19th century.
First settled in 1847 by Europeans as an immigration port second only to Sydney as an eastern seaboard port for free settlers, tick off Australian Curriculum immigration and industrialisation requirements while exploring the town’s highly significant historic customs precinct including the Bond Store, Customs House and Residence.
Splitting into smaller groups, rotate amongst a variety of local attractions and activities within the heritage-listed 12.7-acre Queens Park botanic gardens. Trace the birth of the ANZAC legend amongst the winding paths of the Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial brimming with inscribed pavers, bronze statues, sculptures and panels narrating the story of the battles, and take a ride on the replica Mary Ann Steam Train – the first steam engine built in Queensland in 1873 at John Walker and Co’s Union Foundry in Maryborough.
Enter a world where fact and fiction playfully entwine at The Story Bank – the heritage-listed birthplace of ‘Mary Poppins’ author, P. L. Travers. Within the walls of Maryborough’s former Australian Joint Stock Bank, interact with ‘Mary Poppins’ inspired characters who guide you on a whimsical and informative tour covering the life of P.L Travers and the birth of her magical, literary masterpieces.
